Education Media Project Development Discussion #1

The Full Sail University Education Media Design Technology graduate program has really been an earmark for a challenging stage within my life.  I learned more about myself, my community and my area of career throughout this program than I have in any other degree or training program. This has always been my niche, storytelling, facilitating and educating. Full Sail's Program has given me a more diverse way to express my thoughts and help others do the same. Also the program taught me how to take calculated risks while exploring new boundaries within the technology. The tools that we are exposed to from day one and the opportunities to excel in this field are everywhere. Collaboration is key in this environment. I found that the months I did the best work, on time and meeting within the rubric 100% were months when I engaged with others, sought out assistance and was online using our online tools to get feedback.

Month 1 with Dr.Deason was absolutely challenging and showed me that my ideas could be dead on but I really had to think about the audience which I was creating these tools for. Also, it taught me that I have to make sure that I translate my complete idea or thought for the team when I work with others. Again I really learned to fly again in his course. The idea for online network for veteran women was  "birthed" there.

Each class had with it another area where I learned to examine myself, what I could do and how I could expand or grow from and apply it to learning and facilitation. I can say that applying learning management systems and education theory did cause some challenges because the terminology was different from the focus I had in previous Health Psychology and Counseling classes.

Learning how to design and create a website, music, game, training class, film presentation from scratch properly and understanding the terminology was very difficult for me because of "cognitive dissonance" issues.  The work was not difficult mind you but I have to really understand how I "fit" within a process to gain within it.  This program does not have any time for hand holding but the facilitators do make themselves available and engage in many ways, of that I am appreciative.

There was not one class that I disliked. I had classes where my ideas about the work I had to do were exceptionally challenged, however, I found in every class I was able to complete and meet the requirements. My confidence with collaborating and working with peers in the education and social learning arena have quadrupled. I believe this helped me to get "boots on the ground" with my project a an earlier place in the program and have more experience with applying the tools in varying environments.

Two areas for further exploration with an ed tech degree;
The American Disabilities Amendment Act and how it relates to learning, facilitation and online education. How technological tools must meet the law requirements for students who have varying disabilities. (Possibly as a Certificate or extended learning opportunity.)
Retrofitting this program for trainers, educators and facilitators of adults in the vocational arena. There were areas which I had difficulty translating requirements into adult learning pedagogy because there were very few instances of these examples available. This was a barrier but by no means was it enough to diminish the overall value of the program.

I am appreciative that Full Sail has this program and I look forward to more opportunities for learning from Full Sail in the future.

My Dream Job

Last year I wrote that my dream job would be outdoors in Hawaii possibly on a catamaran. I would have 3 classes a day. We would take our water proofed Ipads out work on curriculums laugh have a few "liquid beverages" and somehow change the world in the process. Of course these would be adults, of course we would be collaborative, six sigma experienced project managing real world educators/trainers/life coaches and subject matter experts working on making a difference in the education arena from the middle up and down. I think that is the only way it can be done. And of course I would be the head SME and lead facilitator.

"I am really not joking. This to me would be fantastic."

Those were my exact words.

After some retrospect I find that my most exciting job would have to be continuing to work social media technology educating adults.  I enjoy finding new tidbits of information, tools and trends and helping adult population learn to use and adapt these tools for themselves particularly when it comes to social media technology and adaptability. I have especially become interested in adaptability for learners covered by the American Disability Amendment Act 2008, although other legislation has been passed with more coverage for this population. The opportunity for more workers with disabilities are out there for "meaningful" employment.

I met a young man with cerebral palsy who writes gaming code. I also met a ward nurse who happened to be paraplegic. Someone had to teach them to intercept the world they live in with the world they work in and I think that is pretty cool.

Now for that catamaran, it will have to wait for my vacations, sabbaticals and times for deep reflection. Otherwise, I will be working with those SME's, working on training or curriculums for corporate, there probably won't be any beverages but triple expresso late with whipped cream, but we will still work to change the world that someone will live in without being limited.

Twitter for working moms

I will deploy the lesson using the embedded video tutorial in flash I created using the step by step process on setting up a twitter account using screenflow. The process is linear with a simple assessment at the end.

Forgiveness: an enemies release

Day by day I said. That is how I take the issue of forgiveness. I have both the world view and the religious view on forgiveness. I also have both on judgement as well. Would you serve a country with everything that you have even though that county had just recently 'given" you the legal right to be a person? Would you give a gift to a neighbor who repeatedly let their dog out that dug up your expensive plants. Could you envite to your home for holiday festivities the person who killed your only child who was enrolled to go to college this past fall? Would you? Could you? Could you see your rapist every day work with them and even serve with them during war time AND fight to defend them if they were in harms way?
See for women and men who served in military uniform and are MST survivors it's amazing to me to even fathom forgiveness. Real forgiveness. The kind of forgiveness that says I will go out of my way to make sure that you are ok, IN SPITE OF, what you did to me. I absolutely struggle with the 70 times 70 because I can not fathom being in the situation that many times and forgiving. Its hard for me. Sorry, its the truth at my present state. I am weak that way.  I have an area in me that says ok I can forgive for this and this but that over there it is too much.  My heart would like to be so kind and overlook the thousands and thousands of men and women who abused their position of authority. Willfully, purposely with intent to harm. (shudder). Its not so easy for me.

Week 1 wimba

I missed the actual class so I listened to the archive of the event.  From the start I like the class requirements. They fit into what I have a natural inclination to do which is blog. I'm not too sure about this whole e-book thing and the book that was chosen but I am going to stay optimistic. Most of the books are very informative from a thesis research and quote point of view but I never really read it ALL. My Wimba mates were very engaged. I hate missing Wimba cause I don't get to "hang out" with everyone and laugh and chat while class is going on. ( I always got in trouble for that in school). Ok this media project thing is going to be a task. I am not a k12 teacher nor am I going  to be in the future. I am not sure how to make this really relevant to a general audience. I guess that will come. Joe is cool. He has been before and this is his baby so it should be pretty interesting. Overall I am hopeful. I think I can, I think I can, I know I can.

week 4 Tutorial; scratch

In one of the tutorials there was an introduction to scratch and then in one of the interviews which Holly Ludgate had with Ron Smith he spoke about scratch also for education purposes. I am pretty challenged with new information. It takes a moment for me to assimilate it and determine how I can apply it to my own uses or purposes. Then a wonderful thing happened I googled and I found that people have been using scratch for second life and then all my dreams were realized. Instead of having to learn linden labs coding (which for me the learning curve has bottomed out temporarily) I can use scratch to have even more interactivity within second life and with the characters I create and animate.  I am now forever connected to my computer like a borg. Thank Apple for the IPad to relieve my lower back and carpel tunnel woes.

week 3 Ron Smith Interview

The interview which Ron Smith and Holly Ludgate had on fso was so eye opening. Ron Smith a teacher in LAUSD actually is using online tools on a regular to teach students in the classroom. I know it's like ok duh BriGette, but I hear so many teachers say how hard it is and how much time it takes.. yada yada yada. He was saying how he used his planning time to work on the productions which were used and then when actual class time started he had all of his content in place for instruction.  I love it!
Some of the tools which Ron spoke about I am familiar with but the possibilities which he spoke of for learning were tremendous. Most of the time I surf around looking for new tools or read blogs about these tools not really understanding the implications for learning which they may have. Here is a snippet about each.

google sketch up pro is no joke- I could spend hours on this. I saw the possibilities for learning since you can import google maps and google earth into the sketch ups.

blender- I have (played with) used before. It takes a minute to learn it. (well for me) creating your own "creature" single cell organism and creating its evolution. I have a lot of learning curve for it. Its 3d animation tool but he actually uses this in the classroom with students.

scratch-is a graphical program language with out all the coding. I am looking at how to use this for second life. Still looking at the possibilities since I spend a lot of time in my "virtual for real" world.

Ron talked about a trend in the future- curriculum design and instrucitional material on line to service students who are not confortable in the classroom. I love it especially since the population of adults which I will be involved with fits that model.

Week 3- New Tools
I am sitting in a meeting right now because it is the all so important professional development day and I am being told all the information that I have learned from this program. No matter where I am I try and learn or gather useful information. So here are a few programs that I learned about today! Hopefully you will find great use for these resources. My mind is already turning with all the great ideas.

Jessica Enjoyed reading your post on new tools. I am looking for teaching tools which can be applied to employees in todays workplace. Any references I read, I always look up to see if they will provide the support needed for production and workplace communication.

Thank you for the list. Amazingly, I had never heard of any of these tools. I want to work with adults. What I have found is that some tools still work well for adults depending on what you are teaching them. If you are an adult education teacher going over math and you are on fractions and additions some of the tools work well.

Week 4 Media Project

Wow this project has been a stress and a half. Everything that could have gone wrong this month has gone wrong. Anything from moving and not having internet to being sick and not having things work out. It is nice to see it all coming together. I have found that my original idea isn't very exciting to me. I actually am not enjoying creating it at all. If I hadn't spent all the time on the content proposal than I would change...I don't want to redo the content proposal. I will keep on working on it and I am sure that I will get excited when it is close to being more complete I will be excited.

Week 2 Post - Thesis Question
Going through vast amounts of research on different facets of my thesis on EBSCOHost, I kept noticing different results pop up that didn't have a very acedemic feeling/tone to them. This got me wondering two things:

1. How do you get your work put up on the acedemic search engines? It sure seems the information that we write is not much different than quite a bit I see on there, I have a feeling some of the research that comes up is most likely from other students.

2. Why would you want to submit your information for others to see when it might be on a ridiculous topic that's not even research? I realize the importance of having all different topics of research, but I would think there should be some sort of criteria into having your work be searched for.

I chose to do my thesis on Teaching Web2.0 Tools to Administrative Assistants. Seems like the thesis as become a main theme of my week 2 blog. I will have “thesis” on my brain all this coming week so why not share it with everyone. When ever I hear the term Web2.0 its usually closely followed with in education. That t is expected in an education Master Degree program like EMDT. All the graduate students where the majority are K-12 educators are bound to hear and talk on how any technology applies to education especially to K-12 public schools. Being one of a few non K-12 educators in this course, I am rogue enough to stand up and shout “enough about the kids because they no longer respond to learning through reading and writing like my generation who were better prepared for their adult working years (gasping for air).” K-12 Education is now being taught with games, videos, social networking, and websites. Adults are also quickly catching on to this modern method of learning but so few in the corporate world know much about Web2.0 tools. You do see plenty of adult workers working around with a smart phones attached to their ears lobes anywhere you look. Other than holidays, I forgot the last time I received a written letter from a friend. Now its all about email, twitter. YahooIM, ichat, Skype and Facebook where I mostly communicate with all my friends, family members and aquaintances living far away or just the other side of town. If you have spend at least 15 minutes a day online, you have probably have used countless Web2.0 tools. Ohoh, I am running on with my words here and the deadline time to download is near. To answer the title question Does Web2.0 tools applied in the corporate world make the users better commuicators? My answer: NO especially if they already lack verbal and written communication skills but, they sure can have more fun practicing to be better communicators! Thank you Mary for reminding me about the go2web20 site. I had forgotten to check back to it in the last months or so.
Now about your thesis I do believe that when people are trained properly on the tools and know the tools limitations and best practices for that tool they become better communicators because the tools they use assist them with reaching more effectively their audience. For instance bringing the daily financial stats to a meeting from the accounting department to a bunch of engineers or explaining work flow to someone who starts or ends the work flow process will take pictures or mind maps, work flow diagrams, financials diagrams. When we understand better the information and its limiting factors we can ask more clarifying questions and in business get to the root cause of issues. This is especially true with quality initiatives which use six-sigma for project management. A web 2.0 tool could assist with phone coverage amongst a clerical pool where a few of the clerks are inevitably late by alerting them by email and a telephone reminder. In a legal office the paralegals from different areas could share a google doc to complete documentation for a brief which they could never get the same schedule to do at the same time. I could be incorrect. I just thought I would share. Much success to you on your thesis!
